Karma festival is being celebrated on Bhadra month shukla paksha ekadashi tithi every year. This year karma festival will be celebrated on 25 September, 2023. Mainly women perform this puja for the wellbeing of brother. Jharkhand tribal people offer puja to Goddess nature.

karma tree and its branches are symbol of God Karma. And people offer puja to karma tree branches on this day. In Jharkhand this festival is being celebrated as traditional festival. If a girl is doing karma puja for the first time then her brother carry her in his arm to the place of worship. Almost all people wears traditional dresses.

Karma Puja Rituals

People follow some instructions in this puja. Women carry sand from near by river 10 days before from the puja. They puts barley and rice crop seeds in this sand. These crops are symbol of good crop cultivation. They put water regularly in this crop seeds. And women sings traditional folk songs at this place.

On the auspicious day of Karma Puja, women visits near by river, ponds for bath. Men forms a group and they sings traditional folk song and plays tribal Indian music instruments called dhol and mandar. They visits karma plant and first they offer pray and cuts three small branches from this tree for puja. They carry that branches on shoulder and it should not touch ground because it is the symbol of God.

They brings that karma tree branch to the worship place called Akhara in local language. In evening time all people gather at the worship place. They decorate this place beautifully. All people wears traditional dresses of Jharkhand.

The traditional dress is made up of cotton material in red and white color combination. Women wears saree and men wears dhoti, kameej and gamcha.

Puja rituals are performed by Pahan (tribal panditji). And he tells the story of Karma – Dharma, two brothers and the reason behind performing this Puja. Women keeps fast without drinking water and food for the wellbeing and they have a strong belief on Karam Gosai.

After Puja all people dance in a tribal style dance posture called as Jhumar here. After 2-3 hours they returns to there places.

How to opens Karma Puja Fasting

Next day morning all women after getting fresh carry rice and karmi vegetable as Prasad (holy food). They offer puja to karma tree branch offer prasad to it and they give a hug to it. Then in group they visit to nearby pond or river and puts tree branch in water. And returns to home. In some places next day Jatra is being organized to celebrate festival with a big crowd. They performs tribal dance (jhumar) there.

Story of Karma and Dharma

Karma and dharma was two brothers in a village. They both were marries. But Karma’s wife was not a good person. She usually puts hot rice water on earth. Karma felt bad for mother earth. One day karma left his home and village and went somewhere else. After that day all villagers were unhappy and nothing was good at that place. Dharma decided to look for his brother and he went from the village.

In his route he found one river without water and the river conveyed messaged for karma that she wants to know the reason why her water is dried up. Then he found one mango tree whose all fruits was attacked by pests. the plant also conveyed the message for karma. Then dharma found one old man and he told that from when karma went from village his shoulder loads are not getting unloaded with other persons help. Then dharma meet with one women and she told that all utensils are getting stick with her hands. please ask karma the reason.

Dharma reached at deserted area and there he found Karma. He asked him to return home but karma refused to go back. He said that her wife puts hot rice water on mother earth. He will not go to that place. Then Dharma promised him that from today no one will put hot rice water on mother earth.

Then they both starts for the home town. first they met with that women she asked him reason he replied that she did not give food to hungry people that’s why that things happened. Not do these kind of inhuman activity further then all things will be normal. after that he replied to river that she did not offer clean water to people that why her water dried up. Further offer clean water to all.

This way karma gave answers for all and returned to his home. Then he offer puja to Karma tree branch in his home. And people starts living happily here after. And from that day all people celebrate Karma festival and tells everyone this two brother’s story.

This day women perform puja at Banyan Tree. Banyan tree is a great source of Oxygen and the tree have very long life. That’s the reason in Hinduism our ancestors made rituals to offer puja at Banyan tree so that for Godsake people don’t cut Banyan Tree.

First perform the puja like every other puja. And offer every thing to maa savitri. Then take a knot of roli on threads present in banyan tree. And start taking rounds of banyan tree. You have to take total 108 rounds of Banyan Tree with the Moli. Then pray to Maa Savitri for the long and healthy life of your Husband, yourself and for whole family members.

Why women do Vat Savitri Puja in India

One very ancient story is correlated with this Puja. In Satyug one lady was born named Savitri. She had some god gifted super powers. And when she came across at the age of marriage her father was unable to get best suitable life partner for her. Her father asked her to search life partner by herself. One day Savitri met with one boy named Satyawan. When she faces Satyawan he was behaving normal. Usually when any men comes in front of Savitri. Because of her superpower the men starts losing his stamina. But Satyawan was standing normal. So Mata Savitri guessed that he is the men whom she should marry. But after marriage Satyawan died. Mata Savitri was pure soul. So she kept fast and offered puja to Banyan Tree. When God Yamraj came to take spirit of Satyawan. Mata Savitri followed her till Yam Dwar. Yamraj asked her to return but she denied. Yamraj said he can’t make alive her husband but in place of it she can ask three wishes. She asked her first wish to return her in laws eyesight. Bhagwan Yamraj fulfilled her wish. She asked her second wish to return her in laws kingdom. Bhagwan Yamraj fulfilled this wish also. Then she asked her third wish to become Mother of 100 sons. God Yamraj agreed to fulfill this wish also. But after this ashirwad he came to know that unknowingly he agreed to make alive his husband. Because husband she can’t be a mother. So in this way Mata Savitri saved her husband life.

From that day all married women on the day of Vat Savitri Puja offer puja to Banyan Tree so that Bhagwan Yamraj save their husband life and provide them healthy life.

Things to prepare for Vat Savitri Puja

It will be good if you buy all puja items before puja date to save time on Puja Day. Usually at puja place you will see very big rush. So its good to reach the puja place at morning time. You should avoid off color dresses on this day. Try to wear bright color cloths which is suggested best to wear for Puja in Hinduism. Usually the day remains very hot because of summer season. Try to complete in morning time. Many lady gets faint during puja.

Navratri puja is one of the biggest festival of Hindus in India. In almost every part of India this festival is being celebrated. It fails two times in a year. One in the month of April and one in the month of October-November. Durga Puja which we celebrate in the month of April we call it Chaitra Navratri and which we celebrate in the month of November-December we call it as Navratri Puja. West Bengal is famous for its Durga Puja celebration and in Durga times many visitor visits Kolkata, Durgapur, Kharagpur and Asansol to enjoy the Durga Puja celebration. In Durga Puja we worship the nine form of Goddess Durga. 1. Maa Shailputri 2. Maa Bramhacharini 3. Maa Chandraghanta 4. Maa Kushmanda 5. Maa Skandmata 6. Maa Katyayini 7. Maa Kaalratri 8. Maa Mahagauri 9. Maa Sidhidatri. Since we worship the nine form of Goddess Durga in these nine days so we call the festival as Navratri. During the puja we read the story of the birth of these nine form of Durga and thank them for being our savior.


Navratri Puja begins with the pratham tithi of Sukla paksha in Chaitra and Ashwin Month in according to the Hindu Calendar. People keeps fast of nine days in this festival and worship all forms of Goddess Durga with full dedication. During this time people eat pure veg food and fruits. First day we worship the Goddess Shailputri. Puja starts with kalash sthapana. Second day we worship Goddess Bramhacharini, third day Maa Chandraghanta, fourth day Maa Kushmanda, fifth day Maa Skandmata, sixth day Maa Katyayni, seventh day Maa Kaalratri, eighth day Maa Mahagauri and ninth day Maa Sidhidatri. On ninth day of Puja, people worship girl child age between 2 to 12 years in the form of Goddess Durga and offer her food, sweets, cloths and money. And ask her blessings. These puja teach us the importance of female in the world. During Durga Puja people from all part of India visits famous temples of Goddess Durga. Very large number of pilgrims visits 51 shaktipeeth of India during these days.

In east part of India a grand Durga Puja festival is being celebrated. Mostly in West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand very beautiful Durga Puja festival is being organized every year. Here people worship very big sized statue of Godess Durga. And also they build Puja Pandal every year to keep the Goddess Durga inside it.

In east part of India people do dandiya dance during Navratri. They offer this Dance form to worship Goddess Durga. In Dandiya people gather in very large numbers in any ground or pandal and offer puja to Goddess Durga. Then they play dandiya full night. Every age group of people take part in Dandiya. And they enjoy this festival to the fullest.

Ashwin Navratri Puja is starting from 26 September, 2022 and is ending on 5 October 2022. Kalash Sthapana is on 26 September 2022, Mahasaptami is on 2 October 2022, Mahaashtami is on 3 October 2022, MahaNavami is on 4 October 2022. Vijayadashmi is on 5 October 2022.
